Michiel Gerber was first brought on as a builder for this stunning residential project in Pine Street, Marrickville, by Jasmax Architect Chris Rogers. As their working relationship developed, Chris recognised Michiel’s own architectural expertise and his passion for finessing and refining details. This mutual respect transformed the project into a dynamic design collaboration across multiple facets.
The client sought to extend and modernise this single-storey period brick bungalow. The design called for the demolition of the rear section to make way for a spacious, light-filled modern addition, featuring soaring ceilings and striking architectural elements.
Michiel dedicated himself to meticulously interpreting the plans, focusing on every detail to ensure the transitions between old and new, as well as the integration of contrasting materials and structures, were executed with seamless precision and elegance.
The single-skin, face brick blade walls on the rear elevation are a standout feature of the design. To tackle the challenges of this complex engineering task, Michiel went above and beyond, collaborating closely with Austral Bricks to design the structural connections and engineer the reinforcement with precision. Additionally, Michiel designed the intricate bracket system to create the sharply refined edge on the roof’s eave profile, a standout feature of the project.
